More than 70,000 alarms and interlocks are provided for accident-free and safe operation at the new EP-600 ethylene complex. The complex has been designed using advanced solutions aimed at high productivity, energy efficiency and industrial and environmental safety. Today the journalists were reported on this point and on the progress of construction of the important investment project of PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim. During the visit to the construction site, the representatives of the city and republican mass media were able to see the scale of construction activities with their own eyes. Lenar Nagimullin, Director of the Plant, presented detailed information on the construction of a new industrial facility, strategically important for Tatarstan and Russia.
Construction of the complex is a critical component in the strategy for socio-economic development of the Republic of Tatarstan, as well as improvement of the Russian chemical and petrochemical complex for the period up to 2030, which envisages a significant increase in ethylene production capacity to meet growing domestic demand and reduce import supplies of derivative products. Ethylene is used to produce polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene. These are the materials needed to produce finished products such as pipes, wire and cable insulation, products for the automotive, aviation, household and medical industries.
Russia's share of ethylene production is only 2% of total global production. The country ranks 11th in this indicator, given that ethylene is the main product of petrochemical synthesis.
Commissioning of EP-600 will allow Nizhnekamskneftekhim to strengthen its position in the petrochemical market as a producer of a wide range of synthetic rubber, to transform itself into a major player at Russian and CIS markets in the sphere of production and sales of various grades of plastics, replacing, among others, their import.
The new facility will be able to process 1,800,000 tonnes of straight-run gasoline per year in order to produce ethylene and such target products as propylene - 273,000 tonnes, benzene - 249,000 tonnes and butadiene - 88,000 tonnes.
Linde, a German company, is the developer of the design and detailed documentation for the new EP-600 plant. Construction of the plant was started in May 2020. Currently, the excavation works have been completed. A total of 100,000 m3 of reinforced concrete structures and 26,000 tonnes of steel structures have been erected.
19.8 thousand meters of on-site networks and 41 thousand long-distance pipes and 56.6 km of cable trays were laid, and 425 pieces of equipment were installed.
Particular attention is paid to ensuring environmental safety. At emission sources, the systems for their monitoring (CEMS) have been designed that provide online monitoring with data transmission to control stations and regulatory authorities.
Modern, efficient dual-zone burners will be used to reduce the formation of nitrogen oxides, and efficient decoking cyclones will help to prevent entering of suspended solids and coke into the atmosphere.
As part of the complex, there will be a local wastewater treatment plant that will ensure a zero discharge of industrial wastewater. Besides, the water will be recycled back into the process after its treatment, thereby reducing the Kama River water adding.
630 jobs will be created upon commissioning of the complex. Graduates of local colleges and universities will have the opportunity to work at modern and safe production facilities. Tax payments to the budget of the republic and the city will also increase. The construction of EP-600 is scheduled for completion in 2023.
During the tour, media representatives visited the construction site, where at present more than 2,500 workers are employed. The journalists saw how the pyrolysis furnaces of the ethylene complex are being constructed and visited the shift camp. Here they familiarized themselves with the working and living conditions of the specialists of the general contractor, Turkish Gemont Ltd. Project Manager, Yashar Kandemir, gave a detailed description of meal arrangements, recreation and leisure activities, as well as observance of industrial safety rules and anti-covid measures by the contractor's employees. Besides, the participants of the press-tour visited the shop for production of pipe units for the new complex, which significantly expedites the pipelines’ installation process. Here, they were told about the specifics and advantages of the site and were given a demonstration of not only the manufacturing process of pipe products, but also the process of strict control of finished products, performed both by the manufacturer and the customer.
Discussions regarding Complex construction were continued during the press-conference organized for the journalists at the head office of "Gemont" Company. Airat Safin, General Director of PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim, and Mukhittin Aktash, General Director of OOO Gemont acted as speakers.
